Assateague Island is a unique place to explore together.
Assateague Island, on the very southern peninsula of Maryland near Ocean City, is a one-of-a-kind landscape. It's famous for the herds of wild horses that roam the marshy island, which you can observe from a distance as you explore the trails and beaches.
Haley and Collin eloped a year before in Yosemite National Park in California, but they're from the east coast. So for their first anniversary photos, they wanted a backdrop that felt a little closer to home.
Assateague Island was the perfect choice – unique nature, iconically Maryland, and a new landscape to explore as a couple.
Ocean at First Light
We met up super early in the morning and headed down to the beach before first light. The couple huddled for warmth on a bench as the sun just started to peak over the ocean.
Long Walks on the Beach
The sunrise looked like a watercolor painting across the sky as Haley and Collin did literally one of the most classic romantic activities of all time – a stroll on the beach.
I really think this was the perfect setting (and activity) for their anniversary portraits, because they got to spend a lot of quiet time, just the two of them, reflecting on the past year together.
Splashing Around in the Waves
It was clear how much Haley and Collin loved goofing around and laughing together as they played around in the ocean, splashing each other and running through the waves.
This created so many sweet, authentic moments I was able to catch on camera. I think the best couple's portraits capture your relationship in action – the way you interact, explore, and have fun together!

Assateague Island Wildlife
One of the most memorable parts of Haley and Collin's anniversary session was definitely that we got to see some of the wild horses on Assateague Island – including a foal!
We followed Leave No Trace rules and stayed far away from the wild animals, but it was still an incredibly cool experience!
